How to Make a Website | TheDroidCity Special

Although the Internet is now more present in our everyday lives than ever before, the barriers for entering it seem higher than ever. While all that you needed in the 1990s was a rudimentary understanding of HTML markup and some server space to make an acceptable website, the technology has developed rapidly in the past two decades, to the point where knowledge of dozens of interconnected systems is necessary to make a professional looking website. And even then, success is not guaranteed.

First, a Server and a Domain to Rule

The first step in making a website is ensuring that you have a place for it on the Internet. The best solution, assuming you cannot set it up yourself, is renting a server. A server is a dedicated computer set up to host your website and make it available on the Internet. Web server space is cheap nowadays and shouldn’t put a dent in your pocket, especially if you decide to host it on a high speed server outside the United States, where hosting can be cheaper. The second part of the server is a domain name. Usually, a server provider also makes it possible to register a domain name for use and manage it through a web interface, so that it directs to the server you rent.

Second, a Design is Made

After the server is up and running, the time comes to create a proper website for yourself. As mentioned, it is a complicated affair nowadays. Professional website design is an interdisciplinary occupation and includes graphic design, web development, familiarity with web standards and the principles of interface design, code testing, and more. However, for beginners, the best way to start experimenting with making websites is to use ready-made website templates. There are thousands of different templates available on the Internet, ranging from the utterly simplistic to the truly professional. As professional pieces of work, they’re the best starting point when it comes to learning the principles of the trade.

Third, Education is Continued

Once the professional website design is live, don’t rest. Gather feedback, evaluate the content, consider the ways in which your website may grow. Start experimenting with more advanced systems, learn the basics of PHP, JavaScript, Flash. The absolute worst mistake you can make when learning to design websites is stopping. Every great website designer started from scratch. Practice and dedication are what makes exceptional designers.

Learning to design websites can be a wonderful experience. Like with other practical skills, you can see progress for yourself. As your skills improve, the websites you create will move closer and closer to truly professional website design, no matter where you started. Patience is key, as the complex nature of a modern website requires navigating through the complex, interconnected labyrinth of modern technologies and aesthetics. And last, remember that feedback is good. Honest, accurate criticism is the best thing you can wish for as a designer. False praise will only hurt you in the end.
